This new house is located in NW Washington DC on a steeply-sloped and forested site. The rear wall of the Chesapeake house is almost entirely glass, with decks extending out from bedrooms to create “outdoor rooms” with views of the wooded site beyond.
Located within Woollahra Council’s Heritage Conservation Area, this residence is perched upon a 5m heritage sandstone wall that forms part of a large bushland setting. The Woollahra house has been designed as a structure that belongs to the park with its strong concrete block corner buttresses rising up from the existing sandstone base.
A couple with property on a cove overlooking the ocean asked for a house that would be comfortable for just the two of them the majority of the time. However, with their love of entertaining, the Georgica Cove house had to grow on busy weekends to accommodate their children, grandchildren, and guests.
The brief called for a beach house which takes advantage of the spectacular natural environment surrounding the site and is able to be used year round. Our response was to lift all of the living functions of the Kawakawa house onto an upper level to give views of the ocean from the living room and to lift the bedrooms up and closer to the light and the canopy of the trees.
