Casa Mateo by Zozaya Arquitectos is perched at one of the highest points in the Punta Garrobo development in Zihuatanejo. The design maximizes the stunning east and west views of the Pacific Ocean and the jungle cliffs, integrating the house seamlessly with its natural surroundings.
Enhancing the Natural Connection
The project aimed to strengthen the user’s connection with the natural environment in their daily life. To achieve this, the design includes pathways, a water patio, and terraces that create relaxing and leisurely atmospheres. These elements encourage a profound interaction with the surrounding landscape.
Thoughtful Access and Entry
Access to the property is via a sloping road leading to the main entrance and covered parking area. The entrance features an outdoor staircase flanked by two stone enclosure volumes, designed as weeping walls. This staircase leads to the central courtyard, which serves as a large reflective water feature, enhancing the sense of arrival.
Segmented Spaces for Functionality
Casa Mateo’s layout is divided into two distinct geometric sections, each serving different functions. One section houses three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, ensuring privacy. The other section contains the living room, dining area, and kitchen, which can seamlessly merge with the pergola terrace and grill area. The master bedroom, situated within this volume, enjoys exclusive access to the infinity pool and ocean views.
Materials and Aesthetics
The main structure is crafted from exposed concrete and partition walls, complemented by local stone and steel for secondary elements. Parota wood adds warmth, creating a harmonious gray and brown palette that blends organically with the natural environment.
Sustainable Design
The project incorporates passive bioclimatic systems, ensuring cross-ventilation in various spaces, which is crucial for the beachside location. Green roofs mimic the surrounding vegetation, reduce paved surfaces, and enhance thermal comfort within the residence. Additionally, Casa Mateo features its own sewage and gray water treatment plant, minimizing environmental impact through water reuse.
Casa Mateo exemplifies how thoughtful design and material choices can create a luxurious yet environmentally conscious home that fully embraces its natural setting.
