This contemporary industrial home, designed and built by dig Architecture, is located in the vibrant heart of Atlantic Beach, just a few blocks away from the Atlantic Ocean. The clients, well-versed in architecture, wanted a home that combined contemporary design with industrial elements. Their knowledge and passion for architecture became a driving force behind the project’s unique aesthetic and functional appeal.
Design Concept: Two Rectangular Forms Merging into One
At the core of the design, two rectangular forms converge on a narrow site. The spaces where these volumes intersect became the public areas of the home, fostering a sense of connection between the different spaces. The minimalist industrial aesthetic, combined with a contemporary edge, creates an innovative and refined living environment.
Challenges and Construction: The Architects Become Builders
During the bidding phase, the clients faced challenges with builders who struggled to understand the unique design vision, often suggesting alternatives that did not align with the original concept. Frustrated, the clients approached dig Architecture to take on the construction of the home themselves. Eager for the opportunity, the firm obtained a residential contractor’s license and began construction in July 2015. After a year of hard work and learning, the team completed their first build—an accomplishment they remain incredibly proud of.
