Over 30 mature live oaks grace the site of Hammock House in Miami, Florida, creating a lush sanctuary for this single-family residence by Upstairs Studio Architecture. The Architecture Press Releases’ Urban Design and Architecture Design Award recognized this project for its skillful blend of thoughtful planning and natural surroundings.
Nature-Led Design in the Heart of Miami
Hammock House embraces Miami’s tropical climate by positioning the home to capture coastal breezes, sunlight, and shade. Instead of disturbing the dense tree coverage, the architects preserved the existing oak canopy. As a result, residents enjoy a peaceful retreat that feels both transparent and grounded. The rugged material palette reinforces the structure’s organic character and helps it blend with the verdant surroundings.
Generous overhangs shield living areas from direct sunlight and rain, which lowers the need for artificial climate control. This approach, combined with strategic ventilation, ensures an airy interior that constantly engages with the outdoors.
Sustainability at Every Step
The architects prioritized sustainability from the earliest stages. By leveraging natural cross-ventilation and abundant daylight, the home significantly reduces energy use. Overhangs and careful site positioning protect the structure from Miami’s heat and moisture, further minimizing reliance on mechanical systems.
