The sense of calm that pervades this house is derived from the way in which the architect has focused views and provided refuge within the bush setting. From a sheltered entrance, the house opens into distinct but well-connected spaces that are defined by perfectly framed picture windows. Generous in all the right places, and snug where it matters, this house has been exquisitely fine-tuned to the environment.

The Korokoro Bush retreat sits at the end of a narrow road, perched on a steep hillside, looking down a bush-clad valley to the Korokoro Stream with views out to Wellington Harbour through a V in the hills. It is two storied with bedrooms upstairs and livings spaces below.

A covered walkway steps down beside the garage leading to the front door with diagonal views out to the north facing deck, lawn and hill views. From the entry, passage through the house follows the line of the hillside in a procession of gentle steps down to the main living spaces, that look over the valley and wrap around a private north facing deck.

The Korokoro Bush retreat is designed as a private and peaceful retreat with colouring and materials that comfortably sit amongst the verdant surroundings. In contrast the garage door becomes like a lantern lighting up at night.

Xilinx Headquarters in San Jose, California / Noll & Tam Architects

This 91,050-square-foot project transformed a tired ‘90s tilt-up building into a modern and inspiring workplace. The goal was to take an office packed with a warren of cubicles and transform it into a high-performance, contemporary office building

Traditional Colt House Modernized by SOUP Architects

The original house was a timber framed Colt House (see info below) extended by a previous owner with a two-storey brick addition in the 1990’s. The site is approximately a mile inland from the Suffolk Coast and surrounded by a number of individual residential properties set within generous well-established landscaped plots.

Beechdale House, London / Paul Archer Design

Unusually, the rear wing of this Edwardian terraced house faced onto the blank side wall of the adjacent house, leaving a narrow corridor-like external space which served only to bring light into the rear reception room.

Black Ranch House by Oza Sabbeth Architecture

This project was an adaptive reuse of a quintessentially ‘humble’ ranch home dating back from the post war era. What it lacks in ‘architectural significance’ is made up by its location. It benefits by an advantageous location on the site that would have been lost had we decided to demolish and rebuild.
