Nestled in the heart of Mt Hotham village, Lawlers Apartment underwent a remarkable transformation under the care of Britt White Studio. The untouched 1980s property was reimagined into a warm, sophisticated mountain haven. Drawing inspiration from Scandinavian and mid-century design, Britt White Studio created a retreat that balances functionality with a serene, organic atmosphere, perfectly suited for its clients’ post-ski escapes.
A Modernized Kitchen and Dining Space
Britt White Studio completely transformed the outdated kitchen, reconfiguring its layout to improve flow and connect it seamlessly to the dining area. This change enhanced both daily living and the potential for entertaining.
A custom bench seat, extending from the kitchen cabinetry to the dining zone wall, added both seating and the illusion of a larger space. To prioritize energy efficiency, the team replaced gas appliances with induction cooking and high-performance fixtures. They also utilized previously underused areas to integrate a Euro-style laundry and appliance pantry, maximizing functionality without compromising the clean design.
Reimagined Bathrooms for Luxury and Practicality
The bathrooms were reconfigured to enhance usability and comfort. In the main bathroom, Britt White Studio relocated the plumbing and removed a wall to expand the space and improve its flow. Combining the separate powder room with the main bathroom doubled its size and allowed for a luxurious, secluded shower.
In the ensuite, the team added a much-needed toilet and increased storage with a mirrored shaving cabinet. These updates enhanced the functionality of both bathrooms while elevating the overall sense of luxury.
A Lounge Designed for Relaxation
The lounge, offering breathtaking views of the Great Dividing Range, became a space for comfort and connection. Britt White Studio added a custom daybed beneath the window, creating the perfect spot to watch alpine storms roll in. Built-in storage beneath the daybed provided a practical solution for organizing ski gear.
A wrap-around couch hugged the wall, optimizing seating while maintaining the room’s spacious feel. The Nicole Lawrence coffee table complemented the Laminex kitchen cabinetry, ensuring a cohesive design aesthetic throughout the apartment.
Durable Design for Alpine Living
Considering the challenges of the alpine environment, Britt White Studio incorporated durable materials throughout the home. They replaced the entryway flooring with Comcork, designed to withstand snow gear wear and tear. A custom-built seating area in the entry offered comfort for gearing up, while a recessed drying cupboard with ventilation ensured clothes and equipment would be ready for the next day.
Hardwood spotted gum flooring, modern cork, and carpeting were laid throughout the apartment. These materials complemented the earthy tones of the furnishings, tying the design together while ensuring longevity.
A Client-Focused Approach
The clients expressed their joy with the results:
“Britt and her crew are fantastic to work with and delivered a stunning renovation for our Hotham apartment—beyond our expectations! Britt designed and project-managed everything from start to finish, so we didn’t have to worry about a thing. The project was even completed by our deadline of season opening. We’ve also been able to increase our rental rates, so we can earn more when we’re not there.” — Cassie
A Transformative Retreat
Reflecting on the project, Britt Howard shared, “The goal was to create a space that felt cosy and calm, a safe haven after a long day outdoors. Every design decision, from opening up sightlines to selecting durable yet beautiful materials, was made with the clients’ needs in mind. We wanted the apartment to be both a relaxing retreat and a practical space for everyday living.”
A Timeless Mountain Escape
With earthy tones, durable finishes, and a carefully curated design, Lawlers Apartment now serves as a serene and functional retreat. Britt White Studio’s thoughtful transformation combines comfort, practicality, and understated elegance, offering the clients an alpine sanctuary they can enjoy for years to come.
