SHH Architecture & Interiors has unveiled a bespoke Music Pavilion on a Surrey estate. Moreover, this state-of-the-art retreat fuses cutting-edge acoustics with a striking architectural presence. Consequently, it delivers an unparalleled listening experience for audiophiles and art lovers alike.
A Client-Centric Brief
SHH first collaborated with the homeowner on their Arts & Crafts residence. Later, the owner—an avid art collector and music enthusiast—desired a dedicated space for music and contemplation. Therefore, SHH devised a pavilion that would honor the estate’s lush grounds while meeting rigorous acoustic standards.
Architecture Within Nature
The pavilion reads as a “building within a building.” Specifically, a double-walled shell creates optimal sound isolation. Meanwhile, Japanese charred timber and Corten steel add warmth and texture. Furthermore, a green roof and living wall blur the lines between structure and landscape. As a result, the pavilion sits lightly among the trees, yet commands attention with its sculptural form.
Structuring Sound
Acoustics drove every design decision. Consequently, acoustically transparent linings and panels ensure studio-grade fidelity. In addition, specialist consultants refined the geometry, scale, and proportions to achieve perfect balance between absorption and openness. Therefore, external noise stays out, and internal sound remains pure.
Light, Materials, and Flow
Large glazed openings flood the 150 m² volume with natural light. Moreover, task and ambient lighting enhance contrasts without overwhelming. Inside, ribbed metal meets warm wood. Then, custom joinery doubles as artwork display. Likewise, a 32-piece Wonderglass pendant casts rippling shadows—evoking water and music in harmony.
A Versatile Retreat
Although designed for music, the pavilion flexes into a workspace or lounge. Electric shading and ASHP heating maintain comfort year-round. Meanwhile, integrated AV, lighting controls, and discreet blinds ensure that technology blends seamlessly into the architecture.
Ultimately, SHH’s Music Pavilion transcends its brief. By marrying acoustic excellence, material innovation, and a deep respect for nature, it becomes more than a performance venue. Indeed, it stands as a serene sanctuary where art, music, and the landscape converge.
