The Art House project includes the addition of three small structures on two adjacent parcels, retaining the original 1920s home where the owners raised their four children, while more than doubling their living space.
A series of volumes was inserted at the perimeter of this 60’s boomerang plan to remedy the staid quality of the previous interior geometry and make the landscape more tangible from inside.
The four old wood-frame cottages along the garden mews at 1338 Filbert Street were in terrible shape in 2007—severely deteriorated, rat infested, and in complete disrepair. The asphalt roofing had failed, and the original wood siding was 60 percent gone. The paint was peeled off, dry rot had destroyed much of the framing, and the concrete foundations were cracked.
Hilltop Cottage was built on a bluff above the Connecticut River, in Lyme, Connecticut, as a weekend retreat for a large, hospitable, cultured family.
The clients desired a versatile, informal family home centered on a bright, day-lit main room that could comfortably accommodate a range of uses as well as objects, furniture and pictures.
This 1950’s house was long in need of an upgrade and expansion to capitalize on otherwise ‘good bones’ and to satisfy the needs of a family with young children.
