Heliotrope Architects designs smart, contemporary works of architecture that transcend style and trend. Process driven and rigorously attentive to detail, we strive for clear, elegant solutions rooted in a thorough understanding of the social, cultural and physical qualities unique to each project. Powered by fruitful collaborations with clients, craftspeople, consultants and colleagues, the work reflects a passion for people and the various, complex places they inhabit.
Founded in 1999 by principals Mike Mora and Joe Herrin, Heliotrope has been recognized locally, regionally and nationally for their carefully crafted private residential commissions located throughout the West. Heliotrope has also developed a portfolio of highly successful restaurants, retail stores, public spaces and work environments. These projects are informed by a deep understanding of human scale and comfort, developed through decades of residential work, coupled with our passion for creating quality urban experiences.
A winner of eight prestigious AIA design awards, Heliotrope is dedicated to creating spaces and places of enduring quality and timeless beauty. We have offices in Seattle and Portland.

This 3,000-square-foot retreat residence is located on a 26-acre site composed of a mature Douglas fir and Pacific madrone forest, with occasional rocky clearings and several small ponds.
Willmott’s Ghost is the vision of James Beard Award-winning Chef Renee Erickson. Serving Roman-style pizza al taglio and Italian aperitivo cocktails, the restaurant is on the ground floor of The Spheres, the centerpiece of Amazon’s Seattle campus.
Located on an eastern sloping parcel above Lake Washington, our primary design directive was to capture abundant lake and mountain views – taking into consideration possible future down-slope home construction with potential to impede the view.
Owners Joe Sundberg, Rachel Johnson, and Patrick Thalasinos have opened their second restaurant on a small neighborhood street in Seattle. Rupee, a follow up to the trio’s well-regarded restaurant Manolin—also designed in collaboration with Heliotrope Architects—was built entirely by the owners themselves.
Cortina restaurant is a new modern Italian restaurant designed by Heliotrope Architects located at the base of Two Union Square, one of Seattle’s most prominent commercial office towers. The restaurant occupies a long L-shaped space
The Collector’s Retreat is not only a place to live but also a space for reflection and artistic inspiration, perfectly aligning with the owners’ vision of a minimalist, art-centric sanctuary.
Revelry’s maxim is ’epic eats/bangin’ beats’ which is the embodiment of an ownership team comprised of Rachel Yang & Seif Chirchi’s Relay Restaurant Group (Seattle’s Joule, Revel & Trove) and Eric (DJ Evil One) & Karen Bowler, Owners of Portland’s Tube/Fortune and Founding Partners of The Music Trust.
Designed for an artist and an engineer, the Artist house is located mid-block in a downtown neighborhood surrounded by common Seattle cottages and bungalows. The owners have listed several additional criteria for their new home: a contemporary style, but not out of place with the rest of the Capitol Hill neighborhood
