Alchemy is the transmutation of a base material into something more valuable. A central principle of the Shor House on Mayne Island is a kind of alchemical transformation of dis-used wood obtained from multiple sources.
This 45-ft-wide property on Vancouver’s Point Grey Rd already had a 17-ft-wide house on it when the client approached the architects. His request: renovate the complex, existing structure while adding a new extension with simple, open volumes.
Our client, a family of four, wanted to root themselves in a long-established and charismatic neighbourhood on Vancouver’s east side. They asked Measured to design a home that while modern in scope and design, would still draw inspiration from the silhouettes of the houses around them
Raven House is our before and after story about the resurrection of a beguiling old house. It’s also a tale of the mediation of a demanding host building and our client’s desire to tailor it in a manner that matched their sensibilities.
If there is a word to describe this house, it would not so much be “bold” or “restrained” but “detailed”. In Rift House, details are the very baseline of quality — perhaps the penultimate example of Measured’s mastery of this craft.
Lagoon House sits on Alta Lake in the resort municipality of Whistler. A sculptural mass of angles, the building is a contextual reflection of its site and landscape, a trapezoidal lot surrounded by a forest of towering conifers, deep-green lake waters, loamy soil, and carpet upon carpet of pine needles.
Take one 1950s split level home in need of renovation. Add a cost-sensitive budget and gutsy clients up for the challenge of playing with everyday materials such as construction-grade plywood, white paint, and the odd IKEA hack.
