A 1950s ranch house failed to make the most of its 17-acre site overlooking two converging creeks. The owners wanted to enlarge the house and take advantage of the sweeping vistas and light reflected off the water.
A dual strategy is applied to this complete reform project: Firstly, the floor plan arrangement is based on an L-shaped service band that integrates the access, wet areas, storage areas and leisure spaces.
The Kahua Kuili residence was conceived as a modern interpretation of a classic Hawaiian summer camp. The project site is located at the base of the island’s large cinder cone, Pu’u Kuili, and offers expansive views of the Pacific Ocean and Kua Bay as well as mountain views to Hualalai.

Writer`s house is an alteration and additional to an existing orange brick veneer residence that was originally designed in the late 1960`s by Michael R. E. Feldhagen. The house was originally built for the current occupants grandparents who were jewish holocaust survivors and immigrated to Australia a few years prior to building the house.
