The Split Cabin, designed by Syndicate Smith, captures the essence of cabin living with a deliberate nod to simplicity and a deep connection to nature. This 1,289-square-foot weekend retreat in the woods offers outdoor enthusiasts a minimalist basecamp for skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer. It blends functionality with charm, making the inconveniences of cabin life part of the experience.
A Design Rooted in the Outdoors
During the design process, both the clients and architect Steven Booher reflected on what makes a cabin different from a house. They concluded that small inconveniences—like chopping wood or walking to an outhouse—enhance the experience of being in the wilderness. With this ethos in mind, the cabin’s layout incorporates intentional design elements that embrace outdoor living.
The structure splits into two wings: one for sleeping and one for living. These sections are connected by an outdoor covered patio, encouraging residents to step into nature as they move between spaces. This thoughtful arrangement fosters a camp-like atmosphere while maintaining practicality.
Functionality Meets Comfort
Despite its simplicity, Split Cabin balances comfort and efficiency. The compact layout accommodates three bedrooms and 2.5 baths, ensuring that it meets the needs of its occupants without excess. Solid walls provide privacy from nearby properties, while the strategic placement of windows captures breathtaking views of the surrounding forest and ridge.
To enhance comfort, a large roof overhang shades the interior from harsh sunlight, creating a comfortable environment year-round. At the same time, the open views remain unobstructed, allowing residents to stay connected to the natural beauty outside.
A Space for Connection and Rest
Split Cabin serves as more than a shelter; it’s a starting point for outdoor adventures and a tranquil retreat to return to. Its modest design encourages relaxation and moments of connection with family and friends. The simplicity of the space ensures that the focus remains on the surrounding wilderness, offering a true escape from the everyday.
This unpretentious cabin reminds us that sometimes less is more. By embracing the small inconveniences and the beauty of nature, Split Cabin redefines what it means to live simply in the woods, offering an experience that is both grounding and refreshing.
