On a down-sloping wooded site in Martis Valley, California, the Martis Camp house carves a serpentine form in the topography that simultaneously provides privacy toward the street while opening towards expansive meadow and Pacific Crest mountain views beyond.
The Portola Valley Barn is a dynamic space, separate from an existing main residence, designed for large-scale entertaining as well as relaxation. Reminiscent of the tin-roofed, weathered rural vernacular of the picturesque surroundings, the compound comprises three primary structures connected by interstitial entryways containing a kitchen and powder room.
The original home was a modest one story over garage, two bedroom, one bath home in the Noe Valley neighborhood of San Francisco. Similar to other homes in San Francisco, when built, a handful of other very similar homes were constructed adjacent to it, each slightly different than the next.
This Los Gatos modern home, which also involved extensive remodeling of the existing modern residence located high above Silicon Valley, was inspired by dominant images and textures from the site: boulders, bark, and leaves.
