This design for a rammed earth extension to a Californian Bungalow goes back to personal key experiences of places. However, I was less interested in a building itself but the interaction it generated and asked why. That was our starting point.
Located in an historic and tightly-held pocket of inner-city Melbourne, this multi-award-winning boutique development features six bespoke urban residences, along with the transformation of a derelict Victorian heritage dwelling also located on site.
Conceived as a collection of contemporary farm buildings gathered under one expansive gable roof, the house’s form is immediately provocative of the traditional farming structures that once inhabited the local area.
The renovation and extension of this terrace house have transformed it from a dark, cold home, into a well-lit, warm, naturally ventilated and energy efficient house, with an excellent connection to the garden and views to the city and rooftops of North Carlton.
Salmon House is a minimalist modern house designed by FGR Architecture for a young family. Structurally, 80 per cent of the new home is concrete and glazing softened by timber cabinetry and greenery, much of which will mature over time.
BENT Annexe adds additional living space to a 1960s home with a lot of charm, while also reconnecting it to the garden. In contrast to the heaviness and introspective nature of the original home, this new, light-weight and light-filled Annexe is open and outward-looking
When it came to creating a design language that could transition between the original rooms of the Princes Hill house and the new extension, we sought to highlight the best of the period features and use materiality to harmonise the spaces.
