The northern Georgian Bay island is remote, breathtakingly beautiful, and entirely private. However, the poor old original cottage was tired, the log walls had rotted to a degree that made the structure dangerous, there was nothing to save.
Located on a unique inside-corner lot backing onto a ravine, the Thornwood house is composed to respectfully address the scale, opacity and materiality of the rich and historic streetscape in which it is placed.
The Cobourg house, adjacent to Cobourg’s Victoria Park, is set deep into the site while accommodating local zoning regulations. Screened by large mature trees, it is intended to have a discreet presence in this conservation area.
A family cottage on a remote and private north-Ontario lake. The Algonquin cottage is on the doorstep of the vast Algonquin Provincial Park. In the summertime it operates as a private family escape and offers a cool swim from the city’s heat, and in the winter as a warm cabin to nestle in after cross-country ski outings in Algonquin Park.
Spanning three very different heritage brick and beam buildings, this technically complex renovation opened up previously closed-off workspaces and exposed the character of the original buildings buried underneath previous renovations.
Negotiating the steep topography of a lake-side site, this holiday house consists of two volumes stacked on one another. The lower volume nestles into the landscape so that it is barely visible as one first approaches the house.
This 1912 rowhouse had fallen into disrepair by the time it was purchased. We sought to turn the dilapidated Edwardian into our home and studio. Having been in the hands of one family since its initial construction, we were sensitive to maintain the building’s presence on the street while also infusing our personalities into the new space.
