The project was to refurbish an existing 1950s suburban house in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs for a young family of 5 who are great art lovers and deeply creative people.
This two-bedroom residence, located in Owczarnia, a village near Warsaw, to a large degree owes its form to its owners, who, wanting a personalized, unique look, agreed to a spatial composition that departed from that of the archetypal home.
Located on a compact infill section, the 180-square-metre house is an example of what suburban living in Auckland’s future can be. With smaller sites, the neighbours are physically closer and so issues of privacy and sunlight become even more pertinent.
The goal for this existing suburban home was to “break open the box” to allow views of the surrounding wooded landscape. Interconnected spaces were created where previously there were walls dividing them.
This suburban house extension is an example of responsible rationalisation of a typical suburban home which offers a stimulating environment and demonstrates environmentally sustainable design. The project is located on a 740m2 site in Kew.
