In the heart of the city and on a 50’ wide infill lot, the South 5th Residence is delineated as a three-story volume that—with an open living room suspended on two piers— deftly negotiates the city of Austin’s zoning regulations and the Oak’s critical root zone, nimbly avoiding tree roots.
The Bouldin Creek Residence progresses down a sloped lot, with increased heft as it goes. It’s squeezed around the oak tree in the middle, and a deck wraps the tree, making it the centerpiece of the design.
Designed by the Michael Hsu Office of Architecture and built by Abode Modern Homes, the Bluebonnet Townhomes truly encompass the spirit of South Austin. Floor to ceiling custom windows were fashioned on-site, and a 20-ft slider opens to a grassy green just off the open concept living and dining area.
The Beauregard House is a transitional building, designed around ideas of salvage / revitalize / reinterpret. The transitional nature of the design allows it to serve its multiple functions of home, office, and vacation rental.
Royal Crest Residence was designed for a rambunctious family of five. The family wanted all the typical things families want in a home, open kitchen and living room, mudroom, playroom and large covered outdoor space.
The team did a lot of “visual listening” to elicit solutions that honor and preserve the spirit of the original residence while upgrading finishes and updating and refining the plan geometry and adjacencies to maximize function and beauty. I am honored to have been chosen to follow the work of one of Texas’ finest.
As is typical with our work this residence is a complete reflection of the homeowners. The Wateka residence was thoughtfully planned to make a comfortable space that lives with them.
Bonita Residence is a small house for a couple that love to entertain and have fun. The couple wanted an industrial, loft look. We searched for an old building to reassemble on the site but the long and narrow site conditions narrowed the search. Instead we used old materials to repurpose in the house, including materials from the dilapidated house and barn that existed on the site.
