The Aveiro Park House stands on a quiet street in the heart of Aveiro, overlooking the lush greenery of the city park. This project is the result of a careful alteration and expansion of a deteriorated Art Nouveau building from the early 20th century. By preserving the essence of the original structure while introducing contemporary elements, the design creates a seamless blend between past and present.
A Facade Rooted in History
The original limestone facade features intricate carvings of plants, animals, and human figures, reflecting the craftsmanship of its time. Because of its architectural and historical significance, preserving this facade became a guiding principle for the entire intervention. Instead of simply adding a modern extension, the new structure emerges as a natural continuation of the original building. The stone body of the house extends outward, enriched by wooden slats that filter light and shadow. Consequently, this interplay of materials and forms creates a visual rhythm that evolves with the passage of time, linking the past to the present.
A Spatial Journey Through Light and Texture
To create a well-balanced living environment, the design follows a thoughtful spatial arrangement across four levels. First, the basement serves as a garage and workspace, offering a quiet retreat for introspection and creativity. Next, the ground floor is dedicated to social areas, encouraging gatherings and fostering connection. Moving upward, the upper floors house four suites, each designed to provide privacy and comfort. Finally, the rooftop terrace offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the city, creating a serene escape above the urban landscape.
Throughout the interior, the warmth of wood contrasts with the solidity of stone, enhancing the home’s sense of depth and continuity. Additionally, the use of natural materials and carefully crafted details brings a sense of cohesion and refinement to every space. As a result, the design achieves a delicate balance between modernity and heritage.
An Urban Refuge with a Timeless Soul
The Aveiro Park House is more than an architectural restoration; rather, it is a reinterpretation of heritage in dialogue with modern craftsmanship. By seamlessly blending Art Nouveau details with contemporary design, the house becomes a reflection of the city’s evolution. Ultimately, it stands as a place where history is not just preserved but reimagined for both the present and future.
