Nestled in the heart of Avilés, the Tourist Apartment by David Olmos Arquitectos showcases how architectural heritage seamlessly merges with contemporary design. Situated on Calle Galiana in a building dating back to 1895, this 60-square-meter gem reimagines space to provide a tranquil urban retreat.
Reviving History with Thoughtful Design
David Olmos Arquitectos approached the project with deep respect for the building’s historic charm. To begin with, the team removed the false ceilings installed during a 1981 renovation. By dismantling these additions, they exposed the original wooden beams, solid stone, and brickwork, successfully highlighting the authentic architectural elements hidden for decades.
Moreover, the layout underwent reconfiguration to enhance the sense of space. For instance, the team demolished the wall separating the kitchen and living-dining area to create an open-plan layout that feels airy and inviting. In addition, they preserved historic details such as cornices and stucco in the main bedroom, adding to the apartment’s timeless character. Even minor updates to the bathroom fixtures prioritized functionality while maintaining harmony with the overall aesthetic.
A Palette Inspired by Avilés’ Historic Center
The design’s color palette draws inspiration from Avilés’ iconic sand-colored limestone, creating a warm and cohesive atmosphere. Specifically, the team finished walls, integrated kitchen cabinetry, and the existing wooden floors in a sandy tone to foster continuity throughout the space. Furthermore, they kept the electrical wiring exposed in black conduits, adding a modern, industrial contrast without disrupting the apartment’s serene ambiance.
Harmonizing Interiors with Architectural Elegance
Interior designer Rosa Pico of Soldecor Interiores added the finishing touches that bring this Tourist Apartment to life. She carefully selected furniture and textiles in complementary shades, with navy-blue accents providing a calming sophistication. For example, the navy tones—featured in the sofa, bedding, and TV console—beautifully contrast the sandy backdrop, enhancing the sense of depth and balance.
As a result, the apartment exudes harmony while respecting the building’s historic integrity. This project blends exposed materials, neutral tones, and thoughtfully curated furnishings to set a new benchmark for urban apartment design.
