Set within the lush tropical landscape of Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, Hotel Nalu Nosara by Studio Saxe is a boutique retreat that seamlessly blends contemporary design, local craftsmanship, and a deep respect for nature. Designed for health, wellness, and surfing enthusiasts, the project reflects the relaxed yet vibrant spirit of Nosara, a destination celebrated for its laid-back atmosphere and strong connection to the outdoors.

A Design Rooted in Nature

Instead of building a single large structure, the architects created individual pavilion-style accommodations scattered among the trees. This approach breaks away from the traditional monolithic hotel model, offering guests privacy while immersing them in the surrounding jungle. Each pavilion is carefully oriented based on sun and wind patterns to ensure natural ventilation, shade, and optimal views of the landscape.

The Yoga and Wellness Experience

One of the highlights of Hotel Nalu Nosara is its yoga studio, which doubles as a multipurpose gym space. Surrounded on all sides by dense greenery, the studio becomes a tranquil jungle sanctuary for movement, exercise, and meditation. The design enhances the feeling of retreat, encouraging guests to disconnect from daily stress and reconnect with nature.

Sustainable Craftsmanship

Local materials and techniques play a central role in the hotel’s design. Overhanging roofs made from recycled teak planks provide shade from the intense equatorial sun, while their irregular patterns showcase the character of handcrafted construction. The pavilions are connected by shaded walkways topped with pergola-style roofs that filter sunlight, creating dappled patterns along the paths and framing views of the vibrant vegetation.

A Contemporary Tropical Retreat

Architect Benjamin Garcia Saxe describes the project as “simple, low-key, modern tropical architecture.” Its success lies in its ability to harmonize with the environment, offering modern comfort while keeping guests closely connected to the rhythms of the natural world. With its thoughtful design and focus on wellness, Hotel Nalu Nosara has quickly become a beloved destination for travelers seeking both relaxation and inspiration.
