This sixteen hundred square foot floor through, West Village penthouse with a private roof was gut renovated and reconfigured as an open, airy two bedroom, two bathroom home.

A new stair and bulkhead were designed for access to a new multi level roof deck complete with a bar and hot tub. Side lot windows and walk-on skylights were added to maximize light and city views.

The layout was carefully planned to create the feel of an open floor through apartment while still providing private bedrooms and bathrooms. Two walnut clad volumes placed along each party wall house the second bedroom, closets and bathrooms and connect only when the large glass Master Bedroom door is closed. When the latter is left open one gains clear simultaneous views to windows at all four sides of the building. A seamless concrete floor running through the apartment and glass doors visually emphasize the flow between spaces.

Kawakawa House by Herbst Architects

The brief called for a beach house which takes advantage of the spectacular natural environment surrounding the site and is able to be used year round. Our response was to lift all of the living functions of the Kawakawa house onto an upper level to give views of the ocean from the living room and to lift the bedrooms up and closer to the light and the canopy of the trees.

Enough House, Steel-Clad Cabin in Nova Scotia by MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects

The latest addition, Enough House, provides accommodation for an intern architect to work closely with MacKay-Lyons. The cabin is an essay in economy: space, budget, schedule and aesthetic. It shares the same minimalist ethic as the adjacent, 1830’s schoolhouse.

Watson House Annexe by Ström Architects

This wooden-clad annexe, completed September 2017, replaced a dated structure in the grounds of a house that Magnus Strom had worked on at his previous practice. The main house was completed back in 2010, and the owner approached Strom Architects in 2015 to replace the existing annexe on site.
