The Brooklyn Heights Brownstone, originally characterized by its vibrant and eclectic 1970s décor, has undergone a sensitive and meticulous renovation by Sonya Lee Architect. The project aimed to modernize the home while restoring its historic charm, particularly in a neighborhood known for its architectural significance.

Restoring and Enhancing Historical Elements

The renovation focused on highlighting the brownstone’s original grandeur, which had been obscured by decades of eclectic décor choices. One of the main features restored was the grand parlor living room ceiling. The lush, vibrant colors that originally adorned the room were revived, bringing back the space’s historical richness. Additional historical lighting was introduced, enhancing the room’s ambiance and restoring its period-appropriate character.

Modernizing the Kitchen

The kitchen, previously dominated by a large, intrusive built-in furniture piece, was fully reimagined. The renovation removed this obstruction, revealing the full extent of the elegant plaster ceiling and the floor-to-ceiling glass doors. A new marble kitchen island with counter seating was installed, alongside custom cherry cabinetry with reeded glass and a floating marble shelf. These elements blend the historical with the modern, maintaining the brownstone’s character while updating it for contemporary living.

Reconfiguring the Garden Level

On the garden level, the floor plan was reconfigured to create more functional spaces. This included adding walk-in closets and en-suite bathrooms for both bedrooms, addressing the practical needs of modern life. A new home-office space, carved out from a previously cluttered area, now features windows, making it a bright and useful space.

Balancing Historical Charm with Modern Living

The renovation of the Brooklyn Heights Brownstone masterfully balances the home’s historic character with the pragmatism and sensibilities required for modern living. The project not only preserves the architectural integrity of this landmark property but also makes it more functional and comfortable for contemporary use.

This thoughtful approach ensures that the brownstone retains its historical essence while meeting the demands of today’s lifestyle, making it a standout example of how to renovate historic properties with care and respect for their origins.
