From Traditional to Modern
The Campbell Valley Residence, located in Langley, BC, underwent a striking renovation led by Madeleine Design Group. Originally built 17 years ago, the home featured a traditional design typical of the area. With their children grown and a desire to remain in their family home, the clients sought to dramatically modernize the space, transforming it into a sleek, contemporary living environment.
Design Concept: Reimagining Spaces
The renovation involved significant structural changes to improve the home’s layout and functionality. The dining room was moved to the other side of the kitchen, and a second-floor bedroom was removed to create a more dramatic, centered front entrance. This allowed the architects to incorporate a double-height ceiling and install a structural steel floating staircase. Beneath the staircase, a prominently displayed wine collection adds both functionality and visual interest.
In the main living space, the design team transformed the traditional layout into a modern Great Room by removing the entire exterior wall and replacing it with a steel moment frame. This update made it possible to install taller sliding glass doors and higher clerestory windows, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor space and filling the home with natural light.
The Black-on-Black Kitchen: A Striking Centerpiece
One of the most eye-catching features of Campbell Valley Residence is the bold black-on-black kitchen. Serving as the heart of the home, the kitchen boasts luxurious black marble countertops, high-end appliances, and a sleek, modern aesthetic. The design exudes a “magazine-ready” look, making it a dramatic focal point within the house.
