Designed by Anacapa Architecture, Drift Hotel Santa Barbara transforms a historic 20th-century building into a vibrant 45-key hotel in downtown Santa Barbara. Located at 524 State Street, this renovation honors the building’s rich past while introducing contemporary design elements that cater to both locals and travelers.
Preserving Heritage, Embracing Modernity
Drift Hotel Santa Barbara stands on the site of a resilient building that survived the devastating 1925 Santa Barbara earthquake. For the past decade, it served as the Church of Scientology, remaining largely secluded from the community. Anacapa Architecture took on the challenge of reopening this iconic structure, blending its historic charm with a fresh, modern aesthetic.
Thoughtful Design and Community Integration
The design approach maintains the building’s mysterious allure while offering a welcoming and stylish experience. By reimagining the interiors, the architects created a space that is both accessible and engaging for the community. The black accents, concrete, and wood elements break away from traditional designs, creating a sleek and contemporary look.
Inspired by the first Drift property in San Jose del Cabo, the hotel features goods from Californian and Mexican artisans. This nod to the brand’s Baja roots enriches the hotel’s coastal Californian vibe. The open layout and promenade-facing garage doors invite passersby to explore the eateries, Dawn and Dusk, while hotel rooms remain tucked away for guests to enjoy privacy.
Seamless Blend of Old and New
Preserving the building’s historic elements was paramount. White stucco walls, arched windows, and terracotta tiles connect the hotel to Santa Barbara’s Spanish influences. These features were carefully salvaged and restored, ensuring the building’s character remains intact.
Inside, the hotel offers a modern travel experience without losing its cozy feel. Rooms, though compact, are ingeniously designed to maximize space. For instance, alcoves under bed frames store carry-on luggage, and glass corners in showers create an illusion of more space. These thoughtful touches maintain a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Flexible Spaces for Community and Comfort
The first-floor layout is designed to be versatile. Operable walls between the coffee shop and bar allow the space to adapt for different needs, fostering collaboration between locals and travelers. Garage doors open onto a pedestrian-only promenade, attracting visitors and revealing the building’s unique history.
Fire pits are strategically placed throughout the clubhouse, offering guests stunning views and encouraging communal gatherings. The scenic roof deck and outdoor swimming pool provide additional areas for relaxation and socializing.
Sustainable and Stylish Features
Sustainability is a key focus in the renovation. The use of durable materials like concrete and steel ensures longevity, while the extensive use of glass maximizes natural light. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also reduces the need for artificial lighting, making the hotel more energy-efficient.
A New Chapter for a Historic Building
Drift Hotel Santa Barbara breathes new life into a once-dilapidated and isolated building. By merging historical preservation with modern design, Anacapa Architecture has created a space that honors the past while looking forward. The hotel now serves as a vibrant hub in downtown Santa Barbara, welcoming guests to experience its rich culture and stunning coastal location.
