For over 70 years, the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund (Haas Jr. Fund) has championed the philanthropic legacy of the Levi Strauss family, granting $695 million to organizations expanding rights and creating opportunities. TEF Design’s interior renovation of the Haas Jr. Foundation Headquarters reflects the deep mission and values of the non-profit. The renovation not only prioritizes the well-being of its occupants, but also embraces the organization’s commitment to equity, transparency, and community. The design provides a welcoming, residential-like space for Board Members while offering an elevated workplace for staff, maximizing access to stunning views of San Francisco.
A Focus on Connection and Adaptability
Located on the 16th floor of a high-rise in San Francisco’s Financial District, the 7,900-square-foot office renovation fosters connection and adaptability throughout the space. Open collaboration zones, such as a library/lounge anchoring the southwest corner, and flexible meeting rooms encourage team interaction, while also supporting diverse uses. To maintain a calm and focused environment, acoustic drapery and baffles were added to minimize noise disruption. Furthermore, arched openings throughout the floorplan define key areas for social gatherings, subtly guiding staff and visitors through the office.
In terms of transparency, it plays a key role in the design. Frameless glazing in offices and meeting rooms provides uninterrupted views and ample daylight, reinforcing openness. Additionally, the design extends this concept to the perimeter offices, where walls pull back from the corners to create a sense of flow along the circulation corridors.
A Space for Gathering and Collaboration
A strategically placed amenity space with an open kitchen and community table offers breathtaking views of Coit Tower and the Bay, encouraging casual socializing and providing a tranquil area for respite. On the opposite side of the lobby, two glass-enclosed conference rooms, equipped with state-of-the-art audio-visual technology, are separated by a movable partition. When opened, this partition creates a large “all-hands” meeting area, offering flexibility for various activities and events, from informal gatherings to large assemblies.
A Tribute to California and the Bay Area
Inspired by the California landscape, the interior design reflects the Haas Jr. Fund’s strong ties to the Bay Area. Natural colors and textures flow throughout the space, with FSC-certified wood plank flooring and local artisan materials like Heath Ceramics wall tiles. Moreover, undulating ceilings and curved archways reference regional landscapes and traditional Spanish architecture, infusing the space with a distinct Californian character. Furthermore, vibrant jewel tone accents in carpets, wall graphics, and furniture express the Fund’s bold commitment to arts and activism. The Fund’s curated art collection further enhances the aesthetic, adding layers of meaning and storytelling throughout the space.
Promoting Health, Wellness, and Inclusivity
The renovation places a significant emphasis on health, wellness, and inclusivity. To achieve this, conscientious material selections ensure the absence of red-listed chemicals in construction. In addition, all-gender restrooms further the organization’s commitment to equity and inclusivity, ensuring that every individual feels welcome and respected.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Haas Jr. Foundation Headquarters, designed by TEF Design, reflects the Fund’s mission-driven focus on equity, community, and transparency. The open, adaptable space aligns with the natural beauty of California, offering a welcoming environment for both staff and visitors. Through thoughtful design choices, such as the use of local materials and attention to inclusivity, the headquarters promotes collaboration, well-being, and a sense of belonging in every aspect of the workplace.
