Located within an ancient stone edifice adorned with high ceilings, large windows, and vaulted cross arches, Harli Offices houses the Jerusalem Development Authority. Ollech + Tol faced the challenge of integrating modern office functions into a building that embodies Jerusalem’s layered architectural history. Consequently, they designed a workspace that both honors and elevates the existing structure.
Embracing Jerusalem’s Architectural Layers
From the outset, Ollech + Tol recognized that in Jerusalem, every new development emerges atop centuries of existing layers. Accordingly, they preserved the old stone walls and vaulted arches, allowing each element to narrate its place in the city’s story. Rather than obscuring these monumental spaces, the architects introduced interventions that are subtle and quiet—enhancing the building’s historical beauty without overshadowing it.
Seamless Integration of Old and New
Throughout Harli Offices, new components blend seamlessly with the original fabric. For example, responsive benches and seating areas occupy public zones, fostering collaboration and personal reflection while respecting the room’s scale. Moreover, the design leverages the high white walls as a neutral canvas, permitting carefully chosen colors and materials to integrate harmoniously. As a result, visitors experience an environment where tradition supports innovation.
Fostering Collaboration and Tranquility
The public space opens to reveal an inviting environment bathed in natural light. Sunlight streams through large windows, illuminating every corner and creating a sense of openness. In turn, the responsive seating—crafted from high-quality materials—encourages users to gather, discuss, or simply contemplate. Additionally, these tranquil zones provide a counterpoint to the bustling energy of office life, ensuring that both collaboration and calm coexist.
Thoughtful Furniture and Carpentry
Every piece of furniture and each custom carpentry element complements the space’s character. Specifically, the exceptional volumes accommodate bespoke desks, meeting tables, and storage units that respect the building’s proportions. Meanwhile, high-quality carpentry reinforces the sense of craftsmanship, linking the contemporary workplace to Jerusalem’s artisanal traditions. Thus, every detail—from the grain of the wood to the profile of the bench—brings together old-world charm and modern functionality.
A Timeless and Forward-Thinking Workspace
Ultimately, Harli Offices achieves a harmonious balance between heritage and progress. By preserving the ancient stone walls, vaulted arches, and high ceilings, Ollech + Tol ensures that the building continues to tell Jerusalem’s architectural narrative. Simultaneously, the introduction of light-filled public areas, responsive seating, and refined furniture fosters a productive and inspiring work routine. Consequently, Harli Offices stands as a testament to how an office can be both timeless and forward-thinking.
