Located in Setagaya City, Japan, the House in Umegaoka by Container Design takes full advantage of its long, narrow site that runs from north to south. The site, which features a noticeable elevation difference from the road, offers a unique opportunity to create an open and spacious environment while maintaining privacy. The elevation naturally offsets the line of sight from people and cars passing by, allowing the residents to enjoy a peaceful, unobstructed living space.
Strategic Courtyards for Light and Ventilation
The design incorporates two strategically placed courtyards—one near the entrance and another between the living room and an adjacent room. These courtyards play a crucial role in enhancing the living experience within the home. They allow natural light to penetrate deeply into the house, despite the narrow and deep layout of the site. Additionally, the courtyards facilitate the flow of wind from north to south, ensuring that the interior remains cool and well-ventilated.
Connection with the Outdoors
The courtyards not only brighten the interior spaces but also create a strong connection between the indoors and outdoors. The design allows residents to feel the presence of their family members and enjoy the surrounding environment from almost any point within the house. This connection with nature and the outside world is a key element of the home’s design philosophy, promoting a sense of openness and tranquility.
The House in Umegaoka by Container Design is a prime example of how thoughtful architectural design can transform a challenging site into a comfortable and light-filled family home.
