Nestled among 500 mango trees, Mango Orchard House by We Design Studio offers a serene escape on seven-and-a-half acres of fertile land. Originally, the clients wanted a simple refurbishment of their parents’ villa. However, Nupur and Saahil from We Design Studio proposed an entirely new design that would better honor the lush landscape. By preserving every single tree and using local materials, they created a tranquil home that blends into its surroundings.
Thoughtful Design and Sustainable Materials
Multiple open-to-sky courtyards were carved from the rectilinear form of the house. This approach strengthens the bond between the built space and the orchard. To avoid cutting any trees, the home’s footprint remained within the boundaries of the old structure. Local brick and sand-faced plaster shape the exterior, while slate tiles, wood, and textured paint define the interiors. Furthermore, the doors are crafted from recycled Burma teak, stained in black linseed oil. These elements showcase the studio’s commitment to sustainability.
Connecting Indoors and Outdoors
A 150-meter cobblestone driveway weaves around existing trees, ending in a cul-de-sac. A bougainvillea-shaded canopy marks the entrance. Inside, a double-height living room visually unites both floors, bringing natural light and air deep into the layout. Large windows frame views of the mango trees, and a black metal staircase adds a modern touch. Outside, a metal canopy encourages bougainvillea to climb and blur the lines between inside and out.
The ground floor contains the living, dining, kitchen, and guest bedroom. On the first floor, three private bedrooms each feature a sunlit bathroom with its own open-to-sky courtyard. Teak furniture, vivid art, and colorful rugs enliven the neutral palette. Meanwhile, the layout remains easy to navigate. Every room invites the outdoors in, ensuring each day is spent in close connection with nature.
Mango Orchard House ultimately reflects a design philosophy focused on simplicity, sustainability, and seamless indoor-outdoor living. By staying loyal to local craftsmanship and materials, We Design Studio has created a modern retreat that remains deeply rooted in its rich environment.
