Nine X Nine House by Sanjay Puri Architects stands on a 3,311 m² plot in Gandhinagar, India. The design works with nature by weaving fluid volumes around nine existing trees on the southern side of the site. Two of these trees punctuate open deck areas, while the others nestle close to the house.
Embracing the Site and Climate
The architects placed the built spaces on the southern side. This choice creates a large garden on the northern side, where all the rooms face outward. They planned the orientation in response to a hot climate, with temperatures often above 35°C and strong southern sunlight. As a result, the design reduces heat gain and keeps the interiors comfortable without heavy reliance on air conditioning.
A Dynamic ‘T’-Shaped Layout
The house takes on a ‘T’ shape in both plan and section. Visitors enter from the northern side through a gate located between a large cluster of trees. As one moves inside, a central spine branches out to the east and west. A striking spiral stairway anchors the center. The building features three levels: a ground level, one level above, and one level below. This layered approach creates an engaging experience as one moves through the space.
Courtyard and Passive Cooling
On the western side, the architects carved out a generous sunken courtyard that channels natural light and fresh air into the subterranean level. An open stairway along an undulating wall—with a waterfall—links the courtyard to the ground level garden. A shallow reflecting pool on the north-eastern side and the waterfall work together to provide passive cooling. The design retains six existing trees within the sunken courtyard and another three on the south-eastern side, further blending the home with its surroundings.
Functional and Flexible Living Spaces
The entrance level houses the common areas, including the living room, dining room, kitchen, and a guest bedroom. The upper level contains three family bedrooms, each opening onto two sides toward trees and the garden. Meanwhile, the subterranean level features entertainment spaces and a small gallery to showcase the owners’ art collection. Every room opens onto large cantilevered decks that are partially sheltered and partially open, allowing flexible use in different weather conditions. These deep recesses help keep the interior volumes cool, even when temperatures soar to 50°C in summer.
Material Palette and Energy Efficiency
Inside, the design features a minimal palette with white marble flooring, wood furniture, and subdued accents. The architects also emphasize sustainability by using water recycling, rainwater harvesting, and natural materials throughout the interior. With ample natural light in every area, the house maintains energy efficiency without relying on air conditioning for most of the year.
Contextual Design that Merges with Nature
Nine X Nine House responds directly to its site. The design retains all the existing trees and builds in harmony with the surrounding landscape. By carefully planning the floor layouts and window placements, the architects ensure that the greenbelt and the sky remain visible from many parts of the house. This approach creates spaces that merge with nature and offer a calm, refreshing retreat from the bustling world outside.
