An active family with a love of boating wanted a home on Chesapeake Bay, surrounded by the maritime charm of Annapolis harbor. These traditional materials, layered with modern insulation, glazing, and building systems create a high-performance structure, contributing to the LEED Certification of the Acton Cove house.
This new house is located in NW Washington DC on a steeply-sloped and forested site. The rear wall of the Chesapeake house is almost entirely glass, with decks extending out from bedrooms to create “outdoor rooms” with views of the wooded site beyond.
Our task was clear at the first sight, we needed to keep the soul of the space, while building a retreat for the creative mind. Located within Woollahra Council’s Heritage Conservation Area, this residence is perched upon a 5m heritage sandstone wall that forms part of a large bushland setting. The Woollahra house has been designed as a structure that belongs to the park with its strong concrete block corner buttresses rising up from the existing sandstone base.
A couple with property on a cove overlooking the ocean asked for a house that would be comfortable for just the two of them the majority of the time. However, with their love of entertaining, the Georgica Cove house had to grow on busy weekends to accommodate their children, grandchildren, and guests.
