For this project, Kimberly Peck Architect transformed the top floor of a classic Park Slope brownstone into a modern, light-filled sanctuary tailored to the needs of a busy couple. Initially, the original space felt outdated and disjointed; therefore, the design focused on creating a harmonious and functional layout that reflects the clients’ dynamic lifestyle while introducing moments of drama and creative flair.

Open-Concept Living at Its Best

At the heart of the penthouse, the design embraces an open-concept layout that blends the dining room, living room, and kitchen into one seamless space. Furthermore, the living room accommodates multiple areas, including a cozy seating nook that bursts into life with multicolored glass pendant lights. Additionally, a dramatic custom-built feature spans the entire length of the room, ingeniously integrating storage, display areas, and a unique guardwall that discreetly separates the staircase leading to the couple’s rooftop garden. Notably, this built-in element showcases a dynamic geometric design, while select sections backed in soft mauve add depth and visual interest. Meanwhile, along the front of the space, a bespoke oak window seat not only conceals the AC and radiators but also provides ample storage, thereby enhancing the design’s efficiency. In parallel, a creamy marble fireplace surround anchors the main seating area, creating a refined focal point that ties the space together. Moreover, wide-plank oak flooring extends consistently throughout the apartment and gracefully up the staircase, where a minimal aesthetic reinforces the clean, modern feel.

A Kitchen That Inspires

The kitchen continues the theme of modern sophistication with a palette that harmoniously blends functionality and style. For instance, soft white lacquered lower cabinets pair beautifully with oak upper cabinetry, thereby infusing warmth into the space. Additionally, the countertops and backsplash, crafted from a striking quartzite in cream, peach, and mauve tones, introduce a subtle vibrancy that catches the eye. In this way, the cream-enameled range takes center stage while a hidden coffee station and a dedicated cabinet for AV supplies keep clutter at bay, ensuring a sleek and practical design.

Playful Refinement in the Bathroom

Moving on to the hall guest bathroom, the design offers a playful yet refined mix of materials and textures. Specifically, peach-toned concrete tiles cover the walls, while cream zellige tiles grace the floor, thereby creating an inviting and warm atmosphere. Furthermore, brass fixtures, a brass mirror, and a brass wall sconce add a touch of luxury that harmonizes perfectly with the custom pecan-veneered vanity and custom concrete sink. Consequently, every element contributes to a space that is both functional and visually captivating.

A Serene Bedroom Retreat

In the primary bedroom suite, the design takes on a more serene and contemplative tone. Painted in a rich, deep blue, the suite creates a calming retreat that immediately soothes the senses. Moreover, the ensuite bathroom, accessed through a bespoke millwork closet, stands as a small yet striking space that showcases impeccable craftsmanship. For example, the rear wall of the shower features floor-to-ceiling slabs of light blue quartzite that form a dramatic focal point visible from the bedroom. Additionally, this quartzite extends seamlessly to form a sculptural bench within the shower, which transitions gracefully into a custom sink accompanied by discreet wood drawers for storage. Meanwhile, the remaining walls, finished in soft beige Moroccan tadelakt plaster, add a warm contrast that balances the cool tones of the quartzite, thereby enhancing the overall ambiance of the retreat.

In Conclusion

In summary, the Park Slope Penthouse epitomizes modern elegance blended with thoughtful functionality. By integrating bespoke details, rich materiality, and a carefully curated spatial arrangement, the design not only celebrates the character of the historic space but also meets the precise needs of its owners. Ultimately, every element, from the dynamic open concept living area to the refined bedrooms and bathrooms, contributes to a residence that is both inspiring and perfectly suited for contemporary living.
