Raleigh Frame House by Katherine Hogan Architects redefines the idea of a residential frame, using it not only as a structural element but as an architectural language that shapes the entire home. Designed for clients who valued both privacy and social interaction, the project responds directly to the unique characteristics of its site and to the homeowners’ lifestyle, which blends an appreciation for art with a love of community gatherings.
A Program Defined by Frames
The design is organized as a compressed bar of private spaces balanced by a series of open frames that expand outward. These frames filter light, create layered views, and extend the home’s social areas into the landscape. The result is a dwelling that protects intimacy while encouraging moments of connection, both indoors and outdoors.
Social Living Meets Artful Expression
The clients wanted a house that functioned as both a private retreat and a gallery-like space for displaying artwork. The frames serve this dual role, acting as thresholds where art, people, and nature intersect. This intentional blurring of boundaries allows gatherings to flow seamlessly into the exterior, reinforcing the home’s social character.
Detailing and Design Integrity
Katherine Hogan Architects approached the project by working “backwards” through the wall section, letting construction detailing refine the tectonic language. Every joint, line, and transition reinforces the guiding diagram: parts merging into a whole. This level of precision ensures that the Raleigh Frame House feels cohesive, with every element contributing to the overarching design intent.
By combining clarity of form, respect for privacy, and a celebration of community, Raleigh Frame House offers more than a home — it creates a living framework where art, architecture, and human connection coexist.
