River of Life House stands as a luminous sanctuary deeply rooted in its natural surroundings. This meticulously designed new build embodies a commitment to sustainable living, providing a haven of tranquility and refuge for its inhabitants. With a restrained and intentional architectural approach, the home harmoniously merges past traditions with contemporary aesthetics, celebrating the natural elements and unique characteristics of its site.

The interior spaces of River of Life House are bathed in natural light, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow throughout the day. The design prioritizes a cohesive and calming atmosphere, inviting moments of relaxation and restoration. The robust base materials, juxtaposed with the overall lightness of the design, establish a sense of balance and grounding, reinforcing the home’s connection to the earth.

Upon entering the property, guests are greeted by a welcoming curved entry void that guides them into a sunken living area. Custom concrete steps elegantly transition between levels, while strategically placed openings frame captivating views of the surrounding landscape, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living spaces. The thermal mass of the concrete foundations enhances passive cooling and provides a durable foundation for daily family life, further integrating the home with its natural environment.

The outdoor landscape unfolds as a meticulously curated canvas, designed to evolve and adapt to the changing needs of its inhabitants. The flexible planning accommodates various ages and functions, promoting both privacy and communal gatherings. The rounded-edge swimming pool, echoing the architectural lines established internally, serves as a focal point within the garden, inviting moments of relaxation and reflection amidst the lush surroundings.

River of Life House is a harmonious blend of past and present, seamlessly integrating elements of traditional coastal vernacular with influences from the climate of Palm Springs. This thoughtful interplay is reflected in the carefully selected planting schemes and the sculptural approach to landscaping, enhancing the overall architectural form and fostering a deeper connection between the built environment and the natural landscape.

From its detailed architectural linework to its sustainable design features, River of Life House exemplifies a deep reverence for the land and a commitment to attuned coastal living. Inspired by the site itself and influenced by broader environmental considerations, the home resonates with a sense of place, belonging, and respect for the landscape, creating a timeless and responsive living environment that feels intimately connected to its inhabitants and its surroundings.

How is the project unique?
The project is unique in it’s form – the main double-gable pitched roof is a contemporary interpretation of the many pitched roof coastal homes around the area, so the result is that this home is unique in the streetscape, yet complementary. What are the sustainability features?
High-spec insulation.
Several Passive Design Features were incorporated into the project, including:
– Deep eaves, and metal awnings for sun shading.
