Northcote Residence is located in an inner-city suburb of Melbourne, Australia, and provides a response to the difficulty of designing a house to a client’s brief on a small block within a cosy neighbourhood cul-de-sac.
Sitting on a 5.5m wide site, and bounded by 6m high walls and behind an existing shop, this 3 bedroom Ascot Vale House in Melbourne’s inner west has deployed a number of clever strategies to transcend its constraints.
An existing interwar duplex on a sloping site was the foundation of this challenging project. The two units had complex floor plans over three levels; including a detached basement. The building’s steep elevation provided excellent views but created a disconnection with the outdoors.
Warrandyte Riverside House was originally designed in the 1960’s by Architect Davis S Gordon for his family, with what we suspect, was a nod to McGlashan and Everist’s award winning Heide II of the era.
