In Christmas day 2015, an out of control bush fire swept through Wye River, 116 homes were lost in the fire. This project replaces one of these homes. The site is located on a steeply sloping block, obliquely facing Bass Straight.
The clients’ requested a dark kitchen which would also throw hints to the industrial aesthetic of the iconic Collingwood Foy & Gibson building in which it is located. The original design did not utilise the vast space, resulting in areas that the clients could not properly use.
The future house was imagined by both client and architect to be a continuation of the long history of people living in a house on the site, and that the new Avonlea house would stand the test of time both architecturally and quality of workmanship.
Kiah House is an addition to a weatherboard cottage in North Fitzroy, Melbourne. The extension comprises two separate pieces of architecture, the master bedroom ‘haven’ – which sits beside the original house extending to the northern boundary, and the separate office poised above.
The Garden Wall house had to sit alongside the existing studio/garage building, allow for direct entry to the second dwelling from the lane way plus maintain access into the garage and to the studio above whilst retaining sunlight in the existing studio room, where the owner worked.
Freshwater Place apartment on the fifty-sixth floor is like a theatre box from which to view the city. Completely re-planned to accommodate a couple with a growing family, spaces for family engagement are balanced with others for retreat within a small footprint.
Treetop House explores architecture that responds to its environment pragmatically but also emotionally, allowing a young family to connect with their leafy surrounds.
The Bird House has a remarkable design and an extremely efficient plan and the illusion of space is maximised through the use of a void and floor to ceiling glazing enabling a greater connection to the environment.
