The Layer residence is a large family house located in regional, coastal Victoria. The site is close to the beach yet doesn’t have any views to embrace. The site is largely sloping from the north to the south and is made up of layers of limestone shelves and underground caves.
Amado are external sliding timber screens used on Japanese traditional houses to protect the inner layers of shoji screens from the weather. The Amado House adapts sliding screens to address Australian conditions, moderating harsh sun and discouraging blowflies with flywire replacing rice paper.
This is a rear extension to a single-storey cottage in Brunswick with difficult orientation characteristics – the north sun only reaching the site from over adjoining houses. The new addition pulls living areas to the rear of the site and uses ‘sun-catchers’ for light and spaciousness in the interior.

North Bondi House is a stunning single-family residence which is both a springboard for entertaining and a private family retreat. A narrow site with overlooking issues paired with a commitment to passive solar design and natural daylighting drove much of the resulting form.
In a lively, active industrial precinct the form of this house can be understood as a perimeter condition; an expanded edge that sits hard up against the site boundary and in doing so, wraps and encloses the domestic program, creating an inner, secluded refuge away from the city.

Subtlety is the one word Theresa St residence evokes. This small home was renovated by Sonelo Design Studio. Despite the modest budget, through rigorous spatial planning, restraint and refined tectonics, the renovation work creates a modest seamless interiors effortlessly disguising the old as new.
