Mum and Dad, our clients, also wanted to be able to have visual connection to the kids both inside and outside of the Peekaboo house, but also be able to have privacy when required.
This design for a rammed earth extension to a Californian Bungalow goes back to personal key experiences of places. However, I was less interested in a building itself but the interaction it generated and asked why. That was our starting point.
The project sought to re-work the footprint of an existing 1930s Californian Bungalow, without compromising the character of the original home.
This addition to an existing Californian bungalow in Brunswick West was from the outset an exercise in ‘quality over quantity’. For the clients, a creative couple with a teenager, achieving ‘more space and lots of it’ was never the goal, rather, opting for considered, flexible spaces that would adapt with them as a family.
This project is a light flooded second storey extension to a Californian bungalow in Northcote, Melbourne. This minimised work to the ground floor and allowed the owners to remain in occupation for a large part of the build reducing total project costs.
