The Muriwai house is a weekend house used by a couple throughout the year as an escape from their urban working lives, located on a steep site perched above the ocean and Muriwai beach.
The clients sought a family forest retreat hidden in the forested hills of Northern California, where an extended community of family, friends and colleagues could gather. We wondered, What if the forest itself was the house?
This 2,500 square foot house responds to the clients’ desire for a contemporary retreat, low maintenance home that is open and light-filled. Fronting Smith Cove, a secluded deep water anchorage ideal for boating and kayaking, the site is densely wooded with filtered ocean views to the north.
Situated in the center of wine country, this farmhouse style cabin in the woods was designed by Wade Design Architects in collaboration with Jennifer Robin Interiors. The house is located in St. Helena, a city in Napa County, California. The Napa Cabin was originally designed as a guest cabin on a wine country property that has a main house on site.
The owners wanted a small house that touched the earth lightly. They are foresters and wanted the interiors to be made with all clear pine from their sustainable forests. Conservation easements required the house be sited 150 feet from the edge of the pond; minimal clearing of the forest was allowed.
Located in a land conservancy, Artist Retreat by GLUCK+ is a collection of wood-clad cubes orient toward a pond at the bottom of a sloped site. These eight forms touch the ground lightly and follow the topography of the land, linked by glass enclosed hallways. Their simple shapes are strong silhouettes in an agricultural landscape, organized in a shifting grid akin to agricultural plots in the area.
Jackson Hole is perched high above the town of Jackson with wide views of the snow capped peaks and vast valley of the Grand Teton National Park. The house is designed by McLean Quinlan Architects, a leading architectural practice in the high-end residential sector.Â
