The Dovecote House, located in Soutelo, Portugal, is an old structure transformed and reimagined by AZO – Sequeira Arquitectos Associados. This renovation brings a touch of magic and creativity to a family home by converting the former dovecote into a playful retreat for children and a poolside balneary.
An Emotional Design Journey
The project began with a heartfelt request from the client to reform the old dovecote in their backyard. Inspired by this, the architects proposed creating a children’s playhouse and a ground-floor balneary to complement the family’s pool. The entire family embraced the idea with enthusiasm.
A Minimal Concrete “Tree House”
Drawing from childhood dreams and fantasies, the architects envisioned the Dovecote House as a minimal concrete “tree house.” This design channels the innocence and wonder of childhood in a peaceful and harmonious way. The structure appears to levitate, giving the impression of a treehouse while maintaining balance and purity.
The interior design follows a minimalist philosophy, intentionally free of superfluous elements. Over time, the children’s works and toys will populate the space, reflecting the consumer society of today. This approach allows the building’s character to evolve naturally with its use.
Preserving Historical Elements
While the transformation is modern, certain elements of the original dovecote were preserved. Notably, the triangular window that once welcomed doves remains as a nod to the building’s history. This detail connects the structure’s past to its present function, adding a layer of nostalgia to its contemporary design.
A Reflection of Simplicity and Peace
The Dovecote House was inspired by the simplicity, balance, and peace often associated with childhood dreams. In today’s turbulent times, the architects sought to create a space that embodies these qualities. The result is a serene retreat that serves both functional and emotional purposes, offering a playful yet calming environment for the family.
Conclusion
The Dovecote House by AZO – Sequeira Arquitectos Associados is more than just a renovation; it is a transformation that blends fantasy and function. By turning an old dovecote into a modern treehouse and balneary, the architects have created a unique space that reflects the joy and wonder of childhood while addressing the family’s practical needs. This project highlights the power of architecture to evoke emotion and create connections between past and present.
