Transformation House ME by Wespi de Meuron Romeo is a gentle conversion of a historic building in Brissago Piodina. The property sits in a village with its own vineyard and offers clear views of Lake Maggiore and the mountains. It is reachable on foot from the village and by car from the road, which also provides garage access.

Revealing Hidden Architectural Qualities

Past interventions had masked the building’s original charm. For example, an oversized terrace with three pillars and extensive plastering obscured its heritage. On the interior, the original quality of the two residential floors had faded. In contrast, the cellar and roof truss still show authentic details. To restore these qualities, the project focuses on revealing and strengthening what was hidden.

Connecting the House with the Garden

Originally, the garden lay too far from the living spaces because of an unsuitable terrace. Therefore, the design moved the living room, dining room, and kitchen down to the basement. This change creates an immediate connection with the garden and allows removal of the problematic terrace. Moreover, a new two-storey high living space was created, which improves spatial communication between the floors and brings in optimal natural light through openings at different levels.

Enhancing Views and Preserving History

On the upper floors, most of the window openings remain as they were, while the lowest floor now features three modern openings that provide better light and views. In addition, non-historic plaster was removed from all façades and old interior walls, exposing the natural stone underneath. This partial replastering reflects how the building likely looked originally, much like other houses in the village.

Modern Updates and Sustainable Improvements

New building elements such as windows, floors, and walls now meet current energy standards. A horizontal ceiling was installed in the bathroom and staircase area to reveal the beautiful roof truss. This design not only enhances the visual connection but also creates a “chimney effect” that aids in natural ventilation. All intermediate floors have been preserved, and the original wooden beams have been exposed for added character. Finally, the vaulted ceiling in the basement was replaced with a concrete ceiling to integrate a new lift.

In conclusion, Transformation House ME successfully reclaims the hidden beauty of a historic building while connecting it to the surrounding garden. By making thoughtful changes, the project enhances light, air, and energy efficiency, all while preserving the building’s authentic character for future generations.
