Tree Vertical House sits atop a sloping, wooded site in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. To minimize its impact on the federally protected dunes, the architects designed a vertical home with a minimal footprint. As a result, the house becomes a tranquil vacation retreat that soars among the trees, offering views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline.
Living Among the Trees
Primary living spaces are placed on the top level, above the bedrooms and work areas. This arrangement accentuates the feeling of living in a tree house. Each level features windows that capture unique views of the landscape. For instance, the primary suite basks in the morning sun, while the kitchen faces west to showcase colorful dusk skies in the evening.
Sculptural Design and Outdoor Connection
Large volumes seem to be chiseled out of the facade, enhancing the building’s sculptural quality. These voids create space for exterior balconies, which strengthen the connection to nature and maintain a human scale. The balconies are clad in cedar, a warm contrast to the white steel skin, and their overhangs choreograph natural light as it enters the interior.
Built for Sustainability
The design incorporates sustainable features such as a high-performing thermal envelope, durable materials, LED lighting, radiant floor heating, and native plantings. Together, these elements ensure that Tree Vertical House not only offers stunning views and a unique living experience but also performs efficiently and responsibly.
In summary, Tree Vertical House is a modern, eco-friendly retreat that blends innovative design with its natural surroundings. It offers a unique way to experience the beauty of the Indiana Dunes, all while maintaining a clear commitment to sustainability.
