This apartment is a small penthouse of approximately 65 square meters from Turku, Southern Finland, renovated by the Italian designer, Maurizio Giovannoni.
Before renovation, too many walls and doors were splitting the space and blocking the light. Designer’s main objective was the repartition of the space in order to take full advantage of natural light, valorizing the beautiful views on the bedroom side of the historical sites from Turku and creating a relaxing living in which the owner can carry out his creative work. The partial demolition of walls was a natural consequence, along with the reversal of the bedroom and living room locations. The overall “concept” was decided together with the owner and the final result was based on a mix of cultures. Otherwise, Giovannoni remarks that the multicultural style has become his favorite.
The wood is omnipresent in this apartment, being a very pleasant and used material in Finnish culture. The floor is covered with parquet of white ash, the shelves as the kitchen table are made of birch. The living room wallpaper has as theme nature, bringing the exoticism, colors and warmth specific to the Mediterranean style. The furniture is a combination of the two cultures, Finnish and Italian, past and present. For example, the red armchair and lamp are Finnish vintage pieces of the ’60s and the suspended lamps are Italian. Also, the bedroom collects items from various sources, based on the central idea of dream and fairy tale. The designer has respected the customer’s wish who said that: “I wanna live in a jungle and dive into a dream”.
Many of the decor pieces were found by the designer in his journeys made during the renovation, in Turkey, France, Italy and Finland. The famous Italian illustrator, Bimba Landmann has designed especially for this apartment an incredible wallpaper. Bimba said: “The client wanted to have a wallpaper to the bedroom in color blue. Blue like night. Blue like a deep sleep and dream. We imagined the silence of the Finnish nature, the frozen trees with white branches like caramels, a winter that covers everything like a white mantle. And a big mysterious face that dreams or meditates or maybe protects all this… who knows. I tried to leave this mystery untouched. I wanted to evoke the charm of the childhood when the world around us was full of magic.”
Warm and hospitable, everything in the apartment fits in perfect harmony!
