The Batten House, designed by FLOWER Architecture, represents a complete rebuild on an existing mid-century foundation. This project reinterprets the design elements of 1960s homes while introducing fresh and innovative details. The house takes its name from the custom board and batten cladding, which incorporates unique shapes and patterns to redefine traditional textures and create a sense of musicality in the exterior design.
A Balance of Old and New
The design juxtaposes the solid brick entry form with a vertical backdrop, creating a striking visual balance. The house also introduces a new upper level, seamlessly integrated into the original mid-century structure. A garage door is thoughtfully incorporated into the design, maintaining the home’s sleek and cohesive look. By preserving the atomic-age spirit of the neighborhood, the Batten House respects its roots while avoiding the temptation to simply mimic historical styles.
The Essential Porch
A key feature of the Batten House is its porch, a nostalgic yet essential element that offers a space for relaxation and community interaction. This welcoming outdoor area serves as a place to unwind after a long day, enjoy time with family, or chat with neighbors while watching the sunset. The inclusion of the porch reflects a timeless approach to home design, blending functionality with social spaces.
A Modern Take on Mid-Century Design
The Batten House stands as a modern reinterpretation of mid-century architecture. By balancing traditional elements with contemporary design choices, FLOWER Architecture has created a home that acknowledges its historical foundation while embracing modern aesthetics. This approach ensures the Batten House is both a tribute to its mid-century roots and a forward-thinking design, offering a fresh take on suburban living.
