Gonzalo Iturriaga Arquitectos designed the Mountain Retreat Home in San Esteban, Chile, as a serene sanctuary on the slopes of Cerro del Cobre. This unique home sits on a predominantly southern slope above a ravine, surrounded by large rocks, bushes, and medium-height trees. The structure is thoughtfully positioned perpendicular to the natural terrain, seamlessly integrating with the rocky landscape.
Architectural Design
The design of the Mountain Retreat Home is defined by its envelope, which uses two concrete walls to articulate the space internally. One wall separates the common living and kitchen area, while the other contains compact bedroom and bathroom spaces. The façade has three distinct sections: the staircase and entrance, the mountain view, and compact enclosures. At the sharpest end of the floor, a small terrace provides a perfect spot to take in the stunning surroundings.
Structural Composition
The structure consists of two concrete walls and a framework of metal pillars and beams, complemented by wooden beams and partitions. The home is elevated above the natural terrain, with 60% of the structure anchored on the site’s rocks. This design choice resolves the complexity of the rocky landscape and enhances the home’s integration with its environment. Perimeter coverings and closures use heat-treated wood, sealed with primers. Additionally, the glass facades feature an external glued thermopane system.
Conclusion
The Mountain Retreat Home by Gonzalo Iturriaga Arquitectos masterfully blends modern architecture with the natural landscape. Its thoughtful design and structural ingenuity create a harmonious living space that connects with the rugged beauty of Cerro del Cobre.
