The Art Deco Elwood Duplex had seen better days, having been subjected to years of alterations and add-ons that left the home in a state of disarray. The challenge was to rejuvenate the home, preserving its original charm while creating a spacious and functional family residence. The clients approached us with a clear vision: to strip the house back to its original structure, enhance its features, and extend it to accommodate the needs of a growing family.
The transformation of the Elwood Duplex is nothing short of dramatic. The rear of the home was extended, and a new first-floor addition was introduced to create a family-sized dwelling that meets modern living standards. The design approach was both contrasting and complementary, blending the old with the new to create a harmonious living space.
Monochromatic materials and finishes were carefully selected for both the interior and exterior of the home. This neutral palette serves as a versatile backdrop, allowing the original features of the Art Deco architecture to shine through while also providing a modern touch. To maximize space and minimize clutter, built-in and concealed storage solutions were integrated throughout the home, offering both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
One of the key design elements of the Elwood Duplex is the emphasis on natural light. Carefully positioned skylights and expansive glazing were incorporated into the design to flood the interior with daylight and create a bright and welcoming atmosphere. The large windows offer uninterrupted views of the garden, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces and connecting the residents with nature.
