Canberra is home to some of the best examples of post-war and modernist architecture in Australia. At Empire House, the brief was for an extension that catches the sun. The result was two pavilions, sympathetic to the existing post-war house, but distinctly contemporary in their detail.
The rural apartment consists of an open entrance, dining and living room area, a kitchen, two bedrooms for the four children, an ensuite master bedroom, three bathrooms and an attic. This wooden-clad annexe, completed September 2017, replaced a dated structure in the grounds of a house that Magnus Strom had worked on at his previous practice. The main house was completed back in 2010, and the owner approached Strom Architects in 2015 to replace the existing annexe on site.
This stone summerhouse of a family of four, spreads through 3 correlated volumes, which clearly can be defined as the seating & kitchen volume, the circulation tower and the sleeping & storaging volume. Around these volumes, the perimetrical terraces are unfolding, some under the surface of the hill, some at the same level and some projected over it.
