The Ashby Residence is derived from the stereotomic operation of subtracting from and adding to a solid volume to enable specific programmatic relationships and daylight conditions. Sited on a typical 50’x150’ single-family residential lot in Austin, Texas, the design questions the standard house massing and arrangement by stretching along the length of the lot.

With commanding views of islands, mountains and sea, the Donovan house is conceived as an open volume of living space set atop a stack of sleeping and secondary spaces. Free from the ground, dynamic wing-like wall planes open towards views and light, while embracing interior spaces and providing privacy from street and neighbors.
This 5,000 sf Santa Fe contemporary home was designed for an art-collector couple to accommodate specific works in their collection. Solar orientation and views factored into the design of the residence, as well as water management and internal privacy.
