A couple with two young children wish to transform a duplex located in Rosemont-La-Petite-Patrie into their principal family residence. The project consists in reorganizing the original portion of the house and enlarging it with an extension in the yard while preserving the façade on the street as required by the city bylaws.
Our clients purchased Salisbury House on a large west facing section as a gutted shell with a new concrete slab poured for a garage addition to the street frontage, and a slab at the rear of the villa for additional living spaces.
The sloping site runs down to a lush garden to the West, where mature trees and outlook provide a beautiful protected rear garden. The clients, living in a high set Queenslander wanted to live on the garden level so that their young children can play outside without constant supervision and enjoy the garden.
Shadow Cottage Daylesford responds to the landscape and climate context in which it is sited. Living areas are orientated to north and to the west as the house drops away to capture views of the towering eucalypts in the nature reserve.
This tired Victorian house was given a complete re-design with new addition completing the vision. Although the house uses fully automated technology, it’s disguised by a warm, textural palette. A timber ribbon of floor and wall travels through the house creating a harmonious, seamless transition from old to new.
