Motutara House in Muriwai Beach, New Zealand

In the context of Auckland’s rugged west coast ‘Motutara’ is the arterial route that connects the west of Auckland to the black sands of Muriwai beach. ‘Motu’ is to sever, ‘Tara’ meaning for peak, describes the action of the road of this name which effectively severs the peak or highland of Muriwai from the low lying coast.

San Anselmo House / Shands Studio

In the picturesque setting of Marin County, architect Barbara Shands has designed the San Anselmo House, a personal project tailored for her family. Situated on a sloping site, this 2,450 square foot residence cleverly utilizes its hillside position

Glade House, Modern Home with Raking Ceilings and Exposed Rafters

The Glade House project is a renovation of a late 1950’s residential dwelling in a bush glade setting in suburban Remuera. The house is modernist in style, typical of the period with low-pitched gabled roof, raking ceilings and exposed rafters. Fundamental to the re-design was the notion of providing “graduated connections” to the surrounding glade, physical and visual.
