The N House, originally designed by X.PACE Design Group, is a testament to timeless architecture. Initially conceived twenty years ago, the house has recently undergone a transformative update. While the nature and form of the building remain unchanged, the interiors have been reimagined to reflect a modern, elegant aesthetic.
Original Vision and Transformation
Initial Challenges
As one of X.PACE Design Group’s early projects, the original N House faced budget constraints that prevented the full realization of its design potential. However, two decades later, the opportunity arose to revisit and update the project, allowing the architects to bring their original vision to life.
Unchanged Structure
The fundamental nature and form of the building have remained intact, a testament to their timeless design. The structure’s core elements, such as the zinc roof tilted to capture northern light and the expansive skylight over the helical white staircase, were already innovative features during its initial construction.
Interior Redesign
Nordic Marine Aesthetic
The updated interiors are conceptualized around a Nordic marine aesthetic—calm, restrained, yet firm. This design ethos is reflected in the new finishes, predominantly timber, which are applied subtly and elegantly throughout the house.
Central Core Cladding
A significant transformation involves cladding the central core of the building with timber, extending from the entry level to four levels below. This creates a cohesive and sophisticated look that enhances the building’s interior ambiance.
Innovative Details
The house originally featured one of the first helical staircases in Sydney homes, a pioneering element at the time. Additionally, the architect invented a unique detail and modified sliding doors to ensure a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, maintaining a uniform level.
